    DESCRIPTION

Material handling is constant in many workplace environments, from warehouses to construction sites to manufacturing. While many objects can quickly be moved by yourself or with a coworker, others, because of their weight and dimensions, may require a hoist connected to a crane. It is critical that you know how to rig and secure a load properly and understand the weight limits and capabilities of the crane you are using. One mistake or miscalculation can lead to serious injury.

    Types of Equipment

There are a variety of lifting devices used in the workplace every day, from hoists to pulleys to cranes. Each of these devices will require a different rigging system.

    Rigging & Lifting

When you rig and lift a load, you must know which hoist to use, what its weight capacities are, and how to secure the load properly. You will also need to be aware of what will need to be checked and all necessary precautions that will need to be taken.

    Accident Prevention

Before operating any piece of equipment, especially a crane, you must perform a thorough inspection. Make sure this includes both your check list and a hands-on inspection. If you are on the ground, make sure you are wearing a hard hat and understand the operator’s signals.
