Back pain is one of the leading causes of injury in both the workplace and general industry. It afflicts nearly two-thirds of the current workforce and is one of the most common reasons for missed work. This course will cover the following learning objectives:
HOW YOUR BACK WORKS
Back injuries often occur from simple, common tasks like sitting incorrectly, moving items, and lifting items improperly.
HOW SITTING HURTS
Sitting puts strain on your back and spine, and the slightest change in posture or position can cause back pain. Everyone is different and not all chairs will fit you properly.
HOW LIFTING HURTS
We all lift things, all the time, but even lifting a light object can cause strain, especially when it is repetitive. Although pain may be obvious when lifting something heavy, it is important to recognize strain may occur from light objects too. Strain can also occur when lifting awkward objects or boxes whose contents shift as you carry them.
USE OF LIFTING AIDS
Using dollies, back braces, or other supportive aids while assisting in lifting and moving objects may make you over estimate your abilities, and cause you to over-exert and strain your back. Back belts must also be used with caution, as they lock you into place and prevent flexibility, an important component of any lifting.
POSTURE AND HEALTH
Posture is a critical component to your health. Improper posture is the cause of almost all back pain, yet, it is something we often ignore or don't even notice. Sitting and lifting with proper posture and staying healthy and hydrated will go a long way to support your back safety and health.
POSTURE AND LIFTING
Just as posture is important to how you sit, stand, and move around, it is also critical to proper lifting. By using correct posture and lifting techniques, many back pain injuries can be avoided.
