We are all different. All of us are shaped differently, from how we sit and stand, to how far we reach to use the keyboard, but most furniture and equipment is not. Desks, chairs, and counter tops are all usually standardized, and although they may work for some, others find themselves contorted, putting unnecessary strain on their bodies simply to do their daily tasks. As we learn about these strains and what we can do to prevent them, it becomes clear why Ergonomics has become so important to health and safety
Musculoskeletal Disorders
Strains, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and tendinitis are all examples of Musculoskeletal Disorders that can occur while working with poor posture and repetitive actions. Your workstation and type of tasks, play key roles in the prevention or exacerbation of these problems.
Ergonomics
In order to maximize efficiency in your working environment, it is necessary to practice good posture, find workstations that fit your specific height, and learn how to work with postures that reduce fatigue and assist in the flow of your activity.
Workplace Conditions
Workplaces are one of the leading causes of injuries, especially when it is not tailored to your specific height and work needs. How you sit, stand, and reach, all play a role in your body’s health and comfort. You should always be able to reach the keyboard, phone, pencils and such with ease. You should not have to bend over to see the computer screen, or kink your neck to talk on the phone.
Hazard Control
You should always be aware of potential office hazards and the types of tasks that cause injury and strain. Rearrange your work space to fit your needs, adjust your chair, and use a headset when talking on the phone. It is important to take breaks to stretch and move around at least once an hour.
